Victory at Grantham

The busy weekend of grassroots tennis for Newark.

Newark Tennis Clubs men’s 1st team captain  Sam Smith and James Lalyk brought back the clubs first win since the big return.

** Men’s 1st - Lincs Nat. League Div 2 **
** Newark 4 - 2 Grantham

The duo (Smith/Lalyk) headed to Grantham for a Lincs National League match in Div 2. Smith warmed up slowly but secured his first set on tie break 7-6 then took his second 6-4. James Lalyk came up against an experienced opponent and lost his singles sets 2-6 2-6 but then found form in the doubles round and the pair took the sets easily 6-2 6-2. This first win puts the team mid table and in a stronger position heading into their next match at home vs Boston.

** Mixed 1st - Lincs Nat. League Div 1 **
** Newark 6 - 6 Louth **
** Louth win on shoot out **

It came to a tie break shoot out for Louth to take the day by a narrow margin! Newark were faced with higher rated players across the board but performed well in their singles rounds. Jon Thornton won easily 6-0 6-4. Sara Jackson (9.1) (cptn) playing Ruth East (7.1) won 6-3 6-2. Matt Holmes battled hard taking his first set on a tie break 7-5 but after a broken string/racket change lost 1-6, then 7-10 in the final set tie break. Jen Brown fell 3-6 3-6 after some long rally’s. Jon/Sara found the doubles round easy and took 6-1 6-1. Matt/Jen took longer to settle into their doubles losing 4-6 and then 6-7 in a final set tie break forcing the team into a tie break shoot out at 6-6. Jon won his tie break singles 10-7 but Sara lost 11-13. Matt/Jen then lost the doubles 8-10.

** Men’s 2nd - Notts Nat. League Div 1a **
** Newark 0 - 12 Lakeside **

The team felt a little deflated after their trip away to Lakeside. The team took just 8 games away from the day and lost the overall team effort 0-12. Greg Eden playing 1st seed lost 2-6 1-6, Hari Kolli 0-6 0-6, Matt Holmes, in action for the second time of the weekend lost 3-6 0-6 and Jamie Croft 0-6 1-6. The team didn’t fair any better in the doubles.
